Ok I originally wanted to see this in theatre's however, i never came around to it. I think it was lack of cash, not sure. However I rented it this afternoon since the servers have been down. I have to admit i was thouroughly pleased. Being a fan of other Sam Mendes films, I was a bit iffy about Jarhead because it was a new style for him, however I feel he truly grasped the concept of the story with absolutley breathtaking cinematography. I have plenty of Marine buddies who absolutley love this movie. Some have been oversea's, some havent. They have all expressed to me (though i had never seen the film) how much it was really like that. But what really hit it for me was a story from a few years ago.
I use to work for a School District warehouse. I would deliver packages to different elementary schools with some other employeed highscool kids. One of our delivery drivers use to tell me stories about Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield. The one story I remember the most was about the raining of Oil and how they were stuck in that nuts for about 2 days. When the oil scene in Jarhead came forward it brought back some other crazy stories he told me. Stories he probably shouldnt have. I found that to be really cool.
I know alot of people were dissapointed with the film because it lacked "action", but i found the film to be more beautiful without it. It told the story of the soldiers and what they go through. Absolutley brilliant. I was impressed with both Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard's performances. It really set me on a new path for Gyllenhaal, because all I can every see is Bubble Boy. =P (even when watchign Donnie Darko)
anyways, i wanted to share my Jarhead experience. Great film. a must see.
